Jeremy Umland, founder of Okami, found his passion for Japanese cuisine as an exchange student in 1981. Situated in the Port of Fukuoka, north of Nagasaki Province, Jeremy became fully immersed in Japan’s culture and hospitality.

Many years later, upon relocation to San Francisco, he began to develop the Okami concept, opening the first restaurant inside Kimpton’s Harbor Court Hotel in 2001. Despite the Bay Area’s thriving Asian Cuisine culture, Ozumo set itself apart by truly focusing on the grand culture and beauty of Japanese food, drink, and custom.
